In an effort to use the interwebs more effectively (other than just pointing to Facebook and saying "Look, we've got 2,915 in our Facebook group! Ha!) the Kansas Democratic Party has hired a dude named Mike Nellis with the specific task of directing our party's online presence.(After a phone call chiding me for calling him a "dude," my friend Mike Nellis wants me to say he's awfully exited about working in Kansas and hopes to bring his experience from the Scott Kleeb for US Senate campaign in Nebraska and all sorts of other online endeavors to our state party. He also encourages me to not call him a "dude" on the blog again, because it's a weird way to describe someone. OK, he didn't really...but it's still true.)
From the Kansas Democratic Party:
The KDP is undergoing some changes this year as we get ready to compete in the 2010 elections. Part of that process will be an aggressive online organizing campaign to help build our party throughout Kansas. I will be acting as the point person for this effort as the party's Online Director. You read it! Click the link and fill out the survey. While Democrats in Kansas and all over the nation are hella better at the Internet than our be-trunked and gray counterparts, we can't just take that for granted and we need to keep on our toes.
As we saw during the 2008 elections, the Internet can be a powerful tool to create change and provide accountability. That's why it's important we use these tools effectively over the next year.
In that very spirit, we've put together a brief 1-2 minute survey about our previous and future online efforts that we'd like you to take. The information you provide us with will be crucial to our success.
Please click here to tell us what you think about the KDP's online organizing efforts.
Thanks for all that you do,
Mike Nellis
Online Director -- Kansas Democratic Party
Tell the KDP want you want. Yay people-powered democracy!

Thanks for the link to KDP so I can highly suggest Larry Gates gets fired for poor leadership. 2010 is going to be a a big slaugther of Dems.
Very funny Jason!
You needed Jason to give you that link? Are you not familiar with the Google?
Yes, definitely the KDP should absolutely be taking advice on the future of the Party from someone who can't use the online machine to find the KDP website.
Insert eye roll here.
Scherer, you left the party, GET OVER IT!
Easy on Scherer!
John Galt
Easy on Galt!
John Galt
Unfortunately, a survey which starts with name and address as required fields and gives you no "opt out" option for future mailings, etc., is not going to get any data from me.
There is an opt out link at the bottom of every email. If you don't want them, then click the link and you're out.
Thats bs i've hit the link several times and i still get the emails
KDP couldn't find someone here in Kansas to take this job? They couldn't find someone who has more of a stake in the 2010 outcomes than resume' building? That's absolutely ridiculous. Miss Anonymous knows of qualified Democrats right here in our own fair state whose applications were overlooked in this process - people who weren't even given the courtesy of an interview (and no, I'm not one of those applicants).
While I don't know anything about any of the other folk who applied, I know Mike pretty well, and I'm awfully pleased he got the job. He's Nebraska born & raised, so while he might not be a Kansan he did only move a few miles south.
I want the party to hire the best person- in my mind you've got to take both Kansan-ness & skill into account. I want the best person for the job, even if that person isn't a Kansans, and while I can only vouch for Mike, I'm quite certain Kansas got an excellent advocate in Mike.
Oh please!
The guy moved about 100 miles south to come to Kansas and help us build our party online. If there were a more qualified or equally qualified candidate that applied I bet they would have gotten the job. I suggest you put your ego back in the closet rather the criticize before anything's actually happened. If you're bent out of shape because your BFF didn't get the job then deal with it and move on.
What is it with this gross, ignorant stigma that some have about people who come to Kansas to help us? That's right, to help us! A lot of good people have come here and worked their asses off for our state and there is nothing wrong with that. Anyone saying anything else is trying to sell something...
Considering the KDPs track record in hiring qualified persons, I'm not going to get all that excited about this hire.
my favorite part of this email:
"The KDP is undergoing some changes this year as we get ready to compete in the 2010 elections."
hahahhahahahahahaha.
Sorry, um, compete with whom exactly?
And should your war-cry be "compete"? I can see the rallies now - Democrats compete! Democrats compete! No cries of "Democrats win" or Democrats Victory!
Hahahaha. Democrats need to get ready for a long-cold next 10 years in Kansas.
Your golden goose is gone, your future has resigned in disgrace, the two replacement statewide elected officials have no name ID and no public persona and Mark Parkinson has stabbed you in the back as much as he has the Republicans.
With the exception of Dennis Moore - if he is still living - the Dems have NOTHING in 2010.
Why else do democratic party groups have the freaking kansas jackass talking to their groups and no candidates, possible candidates or real politicos that actually get votes.
Kansas Democrats - Losers.
Interesting.
You mention this:
the two replacement statewide elected officials have no name ID and no public persona
So far, Attorney General Steve Six has hundreds of thousands of dollars in the bank and 3 years of experience to run on. Dennis McKinney is a seasoned politician who is also raising money.
Who do the Republicans have lined up for either one of those offices who are in any better place than either of those Democrats? Oh, right....no one.
Also, a campaign between Kris Kobach and Chris Biggs for Secretary of State will result in the Democrats picking up an additional statewide office.
So...fine, Sam Brownback might be the new governor, but no one with any knowledge at all about Kansas politics thinks Republicans have much else in the way of hopes in 2010.
Here, here- Biggs is going to KILL Kobach.
if the kdp operates like it did in 2008...2010 might as well be conceded, granted in the 2nd boyda brought on her defeat
You know, seriously, the commenters on this blog simply don't get it when it comes to the real-world conditions in Kansas. Democrats in this state nearly always get smashed in presidential years and they tend to do really well in non-presidential years (course, 1994 is a great counter example, but 2006 is the perfect exmaple).
You want to blame someone for loses in 2008? Blame CANDIDATES.
I worked for the KDP in 2008 so i have every right to criticize their organizing, and blame the candidates i guess saying boyda brought on her defeat isn't blaming the candidates in your book
Hey, if you're going to making claims (i.e. I worked for the KDP) you probably shouldn't hide behind the anonymous tag. Have the guts to stand behind what you say.
loved the survey, a good idea to do outreach online. also like the fact that the state party got money for this job from the dnc after applying. does anyone know, did every state get this money? or did the leadership of gates and johnston that's often ridiculed pull off a victory here?
either way, keep it up kdp!
I hide behind the anonymous because i know how vindictive individuals in the party can be I have been involved since the late 1980's back when we had leaders like Dan Glickman, Jim Slattery, John Carlin...there was better leadership at the congressional level, we didn't have pathetic leaders like claude lee, and beth bradrick (referring to the 2nd district)... however its been in a downward spiral since the mid 90's thanks to Tom Sawyer and Larry Gates
Brad -
you say that Six has 3 years to run, yet don't reference name ID or any kind of evidence that he can actually win on a statewide ballot - so I'd say that is at least up in the air. And, please, the usual Attorney General money that even phill kline collected cannot be counted as support - but it is green and spends just as well!
McKinney. I'm just not sure. And I'm also not sure if anyone cares about the treasurer's race when the Republicans are going to take everything else.
So, Democrats, show me how you are going to win these important offices in 2010?
Governor
US Senate
CD1
CD2
CD4
Secretary of State
With the excetion of Sec. of State, you have nobody up in these congressional districts.
AG? We'll see.
Treasurer? Who cares.
The problem you Dems face in Kansas - When Brownback wins the Governor's office he will turn his political team loose on House and Senate races for 2012. For the first time in the Sebelius/Gates era, the GOP in Kansas will be extremely well funded.
Good luck.
Claude is the Man! I don't care what anyone says.
