House Commerce Committee Sends Minimum Wage Increase to the Floor

The Kansas House Commerce and Labor Committee just voted to send an amended version of SB 160, a bill to increase the state minimum wage in Kansas from $2.65 to the federal minimum wage, to the floor of the House.

Two amendments were approved, one to allow employers to pay employees who are under 20 years old less than the newly hiked minimum wage for the first 90 days of employment (it ties in with the federal Fair Labor Standards Act somehow), and the other would allow the Secretary of the Kansas Department of Labor to automatically increase the state minimum wage to match the federal minimum wage without having to go through all the folderol we've had to go through this time 'round.

With the bill now voted out of committee favorably for passage, it goes to the House floor, where, hopefully, it will pass. Because the House did make changes to the bill, the Senate with either have to concur with those changes, or that body will have to call for a conference committee.

I'll keep you posted- and congrats to the good folks from Raise the Wage Kansas!

It's about time we increased the minimum wage here in Kansas. The current level is a cruel joke. It bothers me that the new law leaves the base level of pay for food service employees at $2.13 + tips. That $2.13 should be raised at least to $4.50.
